The stars of the show would be Teutul and his son, Paul Jr., and their trials and tribulations in the shop while building some of the most sought after custom built bikes in the world. American Chopper Was Being Revived by The Discovery Channel Teutul has been accused of purposely sabotaging a television project, which in turn cost his partner millions of dollars. He recently filed for bankruptcy, listing debts to his various creditors that greatly outweigh his assets.Īdditionally, Teutul is being sued for fraud by a former business partner of his. As the show gained in popularity, Teutul successfully launched a line of clothing promoting the OCC, or Orange County Chopper brand.ĭespite building a small empire with his sons and becoming quite famous, Teutul has found himself in hot water. Along with his sons, Paul and Mike, Teutul rose to stardom with his reality show “American Chopper” where he gruffly shows his sons the ropes of running a chopper business. He sold off all his bike stuff, bought some car shop stuff, and opened DiMartino Motorsports, a car and truck repair company in Walden, New York.Regardless of whether you are a fan of reality TV, you have probably heard of “American Chopper” or you would at least recognize its star and head of the stop, Paul Teutul, with his signature handlebar mustache, tattoos, motorcycle gear and tough-guy image. "I really didn't have any chance for advancement, and I had always wanted to have my own shop, so the natural progression was to leave and start my own place." Derbyshire also said in his filing that Teutul delayed production by taking a long fishing trip and when he did show up to shoot, wouldn't do scenes with Hells Angels higher-up Rusty Coones, which was contractually obligated. (In other words, fraud.) Things also soured when Teutul attempted to change his ownership deal with Derbyshire from 51/49 (in favor of Derbyshire) to a 50/50 split. According to Page Six, in April 2017, Thomas Derbyshire filed suit in Delaware State Chancery Court, arguing that Teutul (his business partner) used the money Derbyshire poured into Orange County Choppers: American Made for personal use. It's amazing that even happened for American Chopper, seeing as how the previous attempt to revive the show, Orange County Choppers: American Made, was mired in lawsuits. American Chopper returned to TV in 2018, a beneficiary of a television-wide "reboot" craze in which a variety of old, familial favorites shot new seasons of episodes.
